I am a native of Pittsburgh, Pa. I was raised on the Hill District (Warren Courts), the Northside, and the suburbs of Penn Hills. Education is life to me. My informative years were spent under the tutelage of young intellectuals that invested in my education. I was taken to lectures, rallies and taught different histories of the world and African diasporas. At the age of 16, I was given a box of books published the year I was born with instructions to build my library and mind. I relocated to Atlanta, Ga as a young adult and where I call home for now.
In Fall of 2006, I entered Agnes Scott College as a part-time Economics major while working full time for the State of Georgia as a Telecommunications Project Manager. I desired a degree for job advancement. In 2009, my financial stability was challenged in the wave of out-sourcing from the US job market. I was scared. I had scratched the surface of my degree and was nervous about the smaller job market. I took a chance and entered college as a full-time student.
I fell in love with the open campus full of forward thinking women and quickly found my place among the Woodruff Scholars. I credit Agnes Scott’s faculty for finishing the molding process started long ago. Whether in a class room or in life, I am the most happy when learning new things and encountering new concepts. Agnes Scott challenged my intellect and steered me into an educational path that fulfilled my perspectives on life and career. In 2013, I earned a B.A. in Africana Studies, a minor in English with a specialty in History and traveled to France for a Global Cultural Studies program.
In 2018, I found myself at another crossroad. I took a corporate job in logistic at a lower pay with little opportunities for advancement. The Atlanta job market was full of educated seekers and a bachelor’s degree was no longer an advantage. I entered Agnes Scott’s Writing and Digital Communications Masters Program with the intend to advance my education thus open doors for additional employment. As a telecommunication and management professional, I was well versed in building digital infrastructures and managing projects. As a master’s student I learned the various functions of technology in the digital age and how it has the ability to change life as we know it.
Education opens doors once closed to many yet the most important door it opens is the mind. Communication is key to building positive and negative personal and business relationships in diverse environments. The combination of both promotes inclusion in once exclusive communities and mindsets. My personal experiences, educational training and professional career enhanced my abilities as a master communications manager in multiple diverse environments and platforms. The Writing and Digital Communication program trained my humanities in the promotion of inclusion and diversity in representation, authentic cultural narratives and activism on digital platforms and all facets of business. In 2020, I earned my Master’s degree.
It is my belief that life is a journey that must be lived, experienced, and enjoyed. Be your best self with all its ups, downs, turns, and twists. It is all about lessons, no matter the environment you find yourself in. There will be many if you’re doing it right. You only have one life, so rock it until the wheel fall off by feeding the vessel of the mind.
